Tobias, I'm in receipt today of your book Reasonable and Holy. Haven't had a chance to do anything other than a quick skim, but wanted to thank you for using my book New Adam as one of your resources. Philip Culbertson
Thank you, Philip. All peace and joy,
Tobias
Reasonable and Holy arrived from Amazon today. Something tells me I'm not going to get anything done for the rest of the day!
Thanks, KM. Will be interested in your take on it. TS
Tobias, I published a review of your book today. You may find it here if you would like to take a look. I can't provide the link in the comment but it will be the 05/28/2009 post.
It was a true pleasure to read. You are to be highly commended!
Thanks, Sherry. I've posted a link in a new Post called "Reviews." I'm honored by your comments.
Tobias, when I changed my mind about same-sexuality, I used the "shellfish defense", but only to the extent that if some laws from Leviticus no longer apply, then it's possible that Lev. 18:22 may no longer apply, or that it may mean something different from what I previously believed.
Finally, what persuaded me several years ago was that, although Jesus never mentions same-sexuality, his teachings consistently point to inclusion. The Gospels are the touchstone for me as I read meaning into the rest of the Bible.
I am near the end of your book, and I've found it to be most helpful in reinforcing and clarifying my conclusions on same-sexuality.
My rector invited me for coffee on Monday to discuss "your blog and your life", as he put it. I'm not sure what the meeting is about, but I'm tempted to give him my copy of your book, whether I'm finished with it or not. Will your book be for sale at GC? I could buy another copy and get you to sign it. Yes, I decided to go to Anaheim. I'll be in that number.
Thanks, Mimi. All the best on your parish presentation.
Copies of R&H will be available at the Church Publishing exhibit at GC, and I'm doing a "book signing" on Wednesday July 8 from 1 to 1:45 or so.
So happy to hear you will be in Anaheim! See you there...
Half way through this book I was able to proclaim it the best I have ever read on the topic of same sexuality and same sex unions. You approach the topic from a different perspective, affirming the goodness of such unions, before dealing with the "sound byte" theology of the nay-sayers. Although I have read extensively on the topic, especially the usual responses to the Biblical texts usually cited, you provided me with new material (the beddings of women, for example). I value this text for its sound theological and exegetical support of same sexuality.
Fran
Thanks, Fran. If you're of a mind, please feel free to post a review at Amazon, and then I can link to it from here...
